Department of Health and Human Services

On behalf of the Global Immunization Division, Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is my pleasure to congratulate the Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) on reaching its centennial year. Your association has been a leader on advocacy and action on many public health issues over the years, both in Canada and within the global public health community. CPHA has been a strong and consistent advocate for evidence-informed policy, programs and practice to promote and facilitate universal access to the conditions that affect the public’s health.

Since 2000, through the Canadian International Immunization Initiative (CIII), CPHA has been an active partner with the CDC in identifying and recruiting human resources in collaboration with the Stop Transmission of Polio (STOP) Program. To date CPHA has recruited 133 participants that have been sent to priority countries through the STOP Program. The Canadian health professionals have provided a range of technical support: strengthening the surveillance for polio and measles cases; improving data management or vaccine safety; assessment of measles and rubella vaccination systems; and supporting the expanded program on immunization (EPI). This international experience benefits your national program as well, through the mutual transfer of knowledge and experiences between Canadian experts and their national counterparts in the countries where they were deployed. Our successful partnership with CPHA has enriched the STOP Program and greatly contributed to the eradication of polio and reduction of measles cases.

Through the support of CPHA, we also obtain support of facilitators from the Centre for Intercultural Learning at the Canadian Foreign Service institute to provide briefings on intercultural adjustment and gender issues to all STOP participants. The introduction of these two topics, along with and the dynamism of the facilitators have contributed to the increasing success rate of the STOP missions.

It is our privilege to collaborate closely with CPHA in supporting the global immunization and polio eradication efforts in the developing world. We would like to recognize CPHA for their partnership in making the STOP Program a success.

We wish CPHA a very successful Centenary Conference in June and with all other events and activities throughout 2010 marking its centennial. Again, our heartfelt congratulations and CDC looks forward to continued collaboration in our mutual efforts to attain Health for All.

Sincerely,

Brenton Burkholder, M.D., M.A.
Director, Global Immunization Division
